Residency of Behavioral Health Nursing

Psychiatric Nursing Academy

Get clinical experience and grow your knowledge of psychiatric and mental health care at Cone Health’s Residency of Behavioral Health Nursing. You’ll gain experience that prepares you to skillfully and confidently care for patients experiencing behavioral health and substance abuse issues.

What You’ll Learn

Improve your critical-thinking skills and your ability to assess the mental health needs of your patients as you work across a variety of behavioral health departments and programs. You’ll also develop your aptitudes for listening and communication and enhance your ability to build good relationships with patients and families.

What to Expect

As a new graduate registered nurse in the Residency of Behavioral Health Nursing, you’ll participate in:

  • Core classes in psychiatric-mental health nursing, with the opportunities for continuing education hours
  • Critical incident response team (CIRT) training
  • Clinical rotations through the assessment department, adult unit, child/adolescent unit, and emergency department at Behavioral Health Hospital.

Each week, you can expect to spend about 20 hours in clinical activities and 20 hours participating in academy-specific activities. Learn more about nursing residency at Cone Health.

After the Residency

After completing the Residency of Behavioral Health Nursing, apply to a Cone Health behavioral health department of your choice and proceed through the standard interview process. Stay in touch with your peers and continue your learning with monthly workshops and paid time away from the hospital participating in fun, rejuvenating activities with fellow new grad nurses and a mentor leader.

**All Internal candidates must submit a manager reference in addition to the three clinical references. Have them use the internal reference form [Word doc] and then email them to Nursing Recruitment.
