Academies at Cone Health for New Graduate Nurses

Nursing Academy Sim LabCone Health offers a number of academies to provide new graduate nurses with a systematic and efficient competency-based orientation program to transition and integrate our new graduate nurses into medical-surgical, critical care, maternal-newborn, behavioral health, and emergency nursing.

Our academies ensure our new graduate nurses have the clinical competency and confidence they need to best serve our patients.

We are currently accepting applications for the Winter New Graduate RN Academy.

What academies are available?

How does the Academy work?

All new graduates hired to work in medical-surgical/telemetry, step-down/critical care, behavioral health, maternal-newborn and emergency departments will be hired through a specific academy. Academy nurses take part in a variety of clinical experiences, core curriculum classes, simulations and hands-on learning experiences.

New graduates spend an average of 12 hours a week in academy-specific activities and 24 hours a week on the nursing units. Following a series of rotations through various Cone Health departments and hospitals, Academy nurses will be given the opportunity to interview with department leaders for open positions in their chosen specialty.

To be considered you must:

  • Be a registered nurse with a current North Carolina licensure prior to starting the Academy.
  • Have a minimum GPA of 3.0
A Bachelor of Science in nursing is preferred.

Is there a time commitment?

If selected for this opportunity, you must commit and sign a contract for thirty months of full-time employment at Cone Health in a nursing department of your academy.

There is a penalty owed to Cone Health of up to $5,000 if the contract is broken.

Who leads the academies?

Each Academy is led by a specific educator or coordinator with a vast range of experience and expertise in your chosen specialty. All of our nurse educators who serve in our academies have master’s degrees, and have a love and desire to teach. Along with mentoring new graduate nurses, our educators are integrally involved in all aspects of the Academy experience.
