RN Operating Room Residency Program
Our innovative six-month Operating Room Residency Program is designed to integrate current RNs into the world of perioperative nursing.
Our Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) serves as the facilitator for this comprehensive program, which will teach the fundamental, core competencies of operating room nursing. Opportunities for learning include classroom lectures, skills labs and clinical rotations through the various specialty areas. This program provides the support and knowledge foundation a nurse needs to transition into operating room nursing.
How Can I Apply?
- You must be a Registered Nurse with current NC licensure by the start of the program.
- You must commit to two years of full-time employment in one of our operating rooms.
- Both new graduates and experienced RNs are welcome to apply for the Operating Room Residency.
- RNs currently working for Cone Health may also apply for the Operating Room Residency.
How This Residency Works
The first part of the program involves classroom and skills lab activities and the introduction of the fundamentals of operating room nursing.
Next, you will complete clinical rotations encompassing all aspects of working in an operating room. Your clinical rotations of six months will include rotation throughout our five inpatient operating rooms and provide exposure to different surgeries offered within Cone Health, including orthopedics, general, eyes/ears/nose/throat, neurology, vascular and gynecological, to name a few.
Upon completion of the six-month OR Residency Program, you will have an opportunity to interview with any of our four inpatient Operating Room departments at Moses Cone Hospital, Wesley Long Community Hospital, The Women's Hospital of Greensboro and Annie Penn Hospital. Once hired into your new position, your orientation will continue and will focus on the scrub role in your selected specialty. You will receive a full orientation into your new OR nursing role.
If selected, there is a contract you must sign prior to starting, committing to the operating room for two years. There is a monetary payback of $5,000 if the contract is broken.
What Can We Do For You?
We realize that the transition into a new nursing specialty can be challenging. Our Operating Room Residency is designed to educate RNs with no operating room experience about the operating room setting. We will provide you with the tools you need to begin your new role as a perioperative nurse.
Your preceptors will work one-on-one with you throughout the program. Offering you the experience and expertise of their specialty, they will help guide you toward competency in the operating room. You will have the support and expertise of a CNS who coordinates the classroom components and clinical rotations to provide the best learning experience throughout the program. The CNS will meet with you on a regular basis to assess your education needs as you work toward independent operating room nursing.

The operating room specialty program is typically offered twice each year. Please call for dates.
