Moses Cone Health System volunteers honored

Bob Bessey, Director of Volunteer Services for The Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital and Wesley Long Community Hospital, and Doris Hall, Volunteer at Moses Cone Hospital, were honored by The Volunteer Center of Greensboro during the Center’s award ceremony last night.

Bessey received the 2010 Governor’s Director of Volunteer Services Award. Hall received the Volunteer of the Year Award.

Bessey became the Director of Volunteer Services at Moses Cone Hospital in 2006. Eighteen months ago, his duties expanded to include Wesley Long Community Hospital. Bessey combined the volunteer groups, increasing the number of programs volunteers take part in and increasing the number of volunteers to more than 400. He even initiated cross-training of volunteers so that they can volunteer on both campuses.

“He is a dependable, strong leader and great leader to his staff and the volunteers,” says Maxene Elmore, 2009-10 President of the Wesley Long Community Hospital Volunteers. “He has moved our program to new and greater heights.”

Hall has been a volunteer at Moses Cone Hospital since 1981. She is a former volunteer board president and spends most of her time working the surgical recovery desk, a busy, high stress area.

“Doris is always cool under fire, she is extremely knowledgeable, friendly and she has a great sense of humor,” Bessey says. Hall has contributed more than 10,000 hours to the hospital as a volunteer.
