Women's Running School to Start

Women interested in a running program or runners who want to step up their pace can do so by signing up for the Women’s Running School. The school is a program of the Greensboro Running Club. Not only will participants become better runners, they will be ready to take part in the in 20th Women’s Only 5K Walk & Run on Oct. 6.

An orientation and kickoff will be held Monday, July 16, from 6 to 7 p.m. at the Women’s Hospital Education Center. The 10-week training program helps novice runners and walkers who would like to become runners train for the Women's Only. It is also designed for experienced runners who want to improve their speed and endurance.

Cost for the Women’s Running School is $65 and includes weekly group runs, membership in the Greensboro Running Club, speaker presentations, a training resource guide and a special running shirt. This is the seventh year for the school.

The Women’s Only 5K Walk & Run, one of the largest “women only” events in the Southeast, drew 3,593 participants last year. Race registrations fund the Mammography Scholarship Fund, which provided more than 500 screening mammograms in 2011 for women who could not afford them. Doctors recommend mammograms as the gold standard to detect breast cancer early.

Women can register for the Women’s Only 5K Walk & Run by going to www.womensonlyrun.com. Registration is $30 before Sept. 15 and $40 afterward. Girls’ Only registration is $10.
