Cone Health Cancer Center Earns Outstanding Achievement Award

Cone Health Cancer CenterCone Health Cancer Center is one of only 79 cancer programs to earn the Outstanding Achievement Award from the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer. There are more than 1,500 Commission-accredited cancer programs in the United States and Puerto Rico. The designation recognizes cancer programs that provide consistent excellence in quality care to cancer patients.

“We constantly challenge ourselves to improve the care we provide our patients,” says Vice President of Oncology Services Skip Hislop. “The treatment results we are achieving and honors such as this are real signs that the hard work and dedication are paying off.”

The Outstanding Achievement Award recognizes the full scope of the cancer program including criteria such as research, community outreach and on-going efforts to improve the quality of care.

The Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons and the American Cancer Society track and analyze the treatment of cancer patients using approximately 29 million records. The 2004-2010 data finds that Cone Health Cancer Center scores above national and state averages in providing patients with recommended treatments for breast cancer (such as combination chemotherapy and the use of tamoxifen or newer drugs that treat breast cancer or help prevent it from returning) and colon cancer (such as timely chemotherapy in patients with stage III colon cancer). Nearly 9,300 people trusted their cancer care to Cone Health Cancer Center last fiscal year.
