Schanel Named to Lead Hospital Services for Cone Health
Judy Schanel has been named executive vice president of acute care services for Cone Health. Schanel will have senior administrative responsibility for all Cone Health hospitals and the Cone Health Cancer Center. She moves into this position June 1. Schanel is currently a Cone Health executive vice president and president of The Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital.
The executive vice president of acute care services position is being created in advance of Cone Health President and Chief Operating Officer Terry Akin becoming president and chief executive officer in January. The position will provide oversight for Cone Health hospitals allowing Akin to focus on the broader network. “I cannot think of a better leader for this position,” says Akin. “Judy has significant experience leading the largest hospital in our network. She brings real integrity, leadership maturity and diligence to all that she does. She is highly skilled at developing other leaders and in building relationships with staff and physicians.” Schanel will continue to lead Moses Cone Hospital until a new president is named.
A nurse by training, Schanel joined Cone Health as part of the Health Services Division in 2002. In 2005, she became vice president and service line administrator for Moses Cone Hospital and was promoted to president, Moses Cone Hospital in 2010. Schanel earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from Georgetown University and Masters of Science in Nursing degree from the University of Pennsylvania. She is an American College of Healthcare Executives Fellow and a 2007 recipient of the Women in Business Award from the Triad Business Journal.
