Business Women Give $30,000 to Comfort Patients After Cancer Surgery

For most cancer patients, focusing on their recovery takes every bit of energy they have. But for Joy Poger, who was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in February, her thoughts turned to others. With a $30,000 donation, she and business partner June Williams established the Wesley Long Patients Comfort Fund. It provides patients with a little extra “TLC” after surgery, something Poger found helpful during her recovery.

“I am grateful I live in a place where I can receive such high-quality medical treatment,” says Poger. This self-identified geek is the CEO and cofounder of Buzzy Multimedia in Greensboro. Realizing that many patients do not have the family or financial resources to provide the support she enjoyed, she and Williams came up with the idea.

The Wesley Long Patients Comfort Fund provides short-term attendant care for those who could benefit from extra support. Sensitive to the sometimes long and lonely nights following surgery, Poger reflected, “Having someone to hold a hand or just be present can offer such comfort.”

Wesley Long Vice President of Nursing and Patient Services Youland Williams, RN, MSN, agrees. She points out that not even the most attentive staff can stay by patients’ bedsides. “We are so appreciative that such a fund is being established,” says Williams. “It will directly impact some of our most vulnerable patients through a difficult and often scary period.” Guidelines are being established for the fund to have the greatest impact.

Poger and Williams hope their initial gift of $30,000 inspires others to add to the fund so more patients will be served. Reflected Poger, “I am grateful for my cancer because it has reminded me of what’s most important – my faith and my dear friends who are present as well as those who have been in my life over time.”
