Cone Health Awarded for Cancer Center Clinical Trial Participation

Cone Health Cancer Center has been honored for its clinical trial program. The Conquer Cancer Foundation of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) recognized six oncology practices with its 2015
Clinical Trials Participation Awards (CTPA) at the ASCO Annual Meeting in Chicago. The CTPA was first awarded in 2003 to recognize community-based practices for excellence in implementing high-quality clinical trials programs and to increase awareness and participation in clinical trials among physicians.

“This award is the result of the excellent work of our research team and everyone who interacts with patients in our studies, from their first appointment to the completion of the trial,” says Cone Health Vice President, Oncology Services, Skip Hislop. "We’re truly honored to be recognized for our work to improve cancer care for people across the community.” More than 300 patients took part in clinical trials last year at Cone Health Cancer Center. Some of the studies were original research by Cone Health staff in oncology, rehabilitation and radiation oncology physics.

“The Clinical Trials Participation Awards are particularly special because they provide the Conquer Cancer Foundation with an opportunity to recognize the leaders in community oncology practices that contribute greatly to clinical advancements through involvement in cancer research,” says Conquer Cancer Foundation Board of Directors Chairman W. Charles Penley, MD, FASCO. “We are pleased to recognize these practices for their commitment to scientific innovation and for their efforts to bring therapeutic breakthroughs to patients within their communities.”

Practices that receive the CTPA are selected based on a variety of criteria, with preference given to research sites that have demonstrated the ability to overcome barriers in clinical trials accrual, as well as to provide care and outreach to under-served populations in their communities.
