Oncologist Joins Annie Penn Hospital

Shannon Penland, MD, is experienced in providing cancer care in rural areas.

Shannon K. Penland, MD, has joined Cone Health Cancer Center at Annie Penn Hospital. Penland comes to North Carolina from a small, solo practice in rural Mississippi that she developed into a thriving, multi-provider programOncologist Shannon Penland accredited by the Commission on Cancer.

“Working in small towns and rural areas, you really get to know your patients and build relationships. But you often lack the technology and resources of larger cancer centers,” Penland says. “That is the beauty of Cone Health Cancer Center at Annie Penn Hospital. If my patients need really advanced technology, it is just down the road in Greensboro. If I need to talk over treatment options, I have an army of colleagues at Cone Health.”

Penland went to medical school and was a resident at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She completed her hematology/oncology fellowship at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Penland also completed research fellowships at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and at GlaxoSmithKline. She has received a number of clinical, academic and research honors.

Penland is board certified in oncology, and hospice and palliative medicine.

“Dr. Penland’s wealth of knowledge and experience, combined with our dedication to excellent care and advanced technology, makes Annie Penn Hospital an even better choice for cancer care,” says Cone Health Vice President of Oncology Services Skip Hislop.

The Cone Health Cancer Center is rated as the top cancer center in the Triad and one of the top 100 cancer centers in the nation for 2016 by CareChex®—a division of Comparion. The Cancer Center at Annie Penn Hospital is accredited by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer and the Quality Oncology Practice Initiative.
