Society of Thoracic Surgeons Awards Cone Health Cardiac Surgery Program Top Three-Star Ratings

Only 12 heart programs in the nation earned three stars in all three areas tracked by the society.

Triad Cardiac & Thoracic Surgeons and Cone Health Heart & Vascular Center have earned three stars – the highest rating – in all three categories tracked by the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS). Only a dozen heart programs in the nation matched this achievement.

The star ratings are based on the 2014 Society of Thoracic Surgeons National Adult Cardiac Surgery Database. The stars are awarded for coronary arterial bypass graft (CABG), aortic valve replacement (AVR) and a combination of the two. 12 to 15 percent of programs receive the highest rating in each category. Only 12 of the 1005 participating cardiac surgery centers tracked by the STS earned the highest rating in all three categories with the Cone Health Cardiac Surgery Program being one of them.

“This is a great achievement for our patients and our cardiac surgery program. It confirms the nationally ranked “top decile” care provided in our community,” says Cone Health Chief of Surgery Edward Gerhardt, MD. “There are few places anywhere that provide better cardiovascular care than Cone Health.”

The STS Adult Cardiac Surgery Database was established in 1989 as an initiative for quality improvement and patient safety among cardio-thoracic surgeons. Over a thousand cardiac surgery programs voluntarily report clinical outcomes.  This marks the fifth year Cone Health Cardiac Surgery has received a top three-star rating for CABG from the society. In subsequent years, ratings for AVR and AVR/CABG were added.  Starting in 2013, Cone Health Cardiac Surgery earned a three-star rating for combined CABG/AVR.

The Society of Thoracic Surgeons is a leader in establishing and reporting quality guidelines that give consumers the tools they need to make informed decisions about their care. Cardiothoracic surgeons voluntarily report their outcomes to improve the care and safety of patients.

Triad Cardiac & Thoracic Surgeons is part of Cone Health Medical Group.
