Doctors in 174 countries use UpToDate to keep up with the latest medical research. The program suggests treatment options based on the latest science and on suggestions from leading physicians.

While being named editor-in-chief of the sports medicine section is a great personal honor, Fields is quick to point to other Cone Health Sports Medicine physicians who have contributed to UpToDate. “Several physicians from Cone Health and from the community, including Dr. Sara Neal, Dr. Ryan Draper, Dr. Rebecca Bassett and graduates of the sports medicine fellowship, have helped complete topics for UpToDate,” says Fields. “This reflects positively on the commitment of Cone Health to developing the highest standards of care and sharing them with others.”

His distinguished career in sport medicine includes being past president of the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine. Fields is chairman of the North Carolina Medical Society's Sports Medicine Committee and lectures for the American Academy of Family Physicians, the American College of Sports Medicine and the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine. Fields has been a visiting professor in Australia, Norway, China, South Africa, Chile and Italy.
