Moses Cone Hospital Emergency Department Recognized Nationally for Excellence

Lantern AwardThe emergency department at Moses Cone Hospital has been selected to receive the prestigious Lantern Award, making it the only emergency department in North Carolina recognized for excellence by the international Emergency Nurses Association (ENA).

The Lantern Award recognizes exceptional practice and innovative performance in the core areas of leadership, practice, education, advocacy and research. The award honors an emergency department's commitment to quality, safety, presence of a healthy work environment and accomplishment in incorporating evidence-based practice and innovation into exceptional emergency care.

“Our team focus on excellence in patient care led to this outstanding national recognition,” said Mickey Foster, president of Moses Cone Hospital and senior vice president at Cone Health. “The Lantern Award indicates that we are meeting national benchmarks for excellence in emergency department quality and care.”

Moses Cone is one of 11 hospitals in the nation to receive Lantern Award recognition for emergency department excellence this year. Recipients will be recognized at ENA's Awards Gala on September 17 in Los Angeles.

"The 2016 Lantern Award recipients have met a rigorous set of standards for excellence," said ENA president Kathleen E. Carlson. "We look for the highest level of performance in emergency departments – emergency departments that go above and beyond to ensure quality safe practice and care for their patients."

The Lantern Award is named in honor of Florence Nightingale, who is credited with changing nursing from an untrained job to a skilled, science-based profession. She is referred to as the "Lady of the Lamp" for her actions during the Crimean War when she worked deep into the night, bringing a lantern with her as she tended to wounded British soldiers as they slept.

“I’m very proud of all the nurses, physicians and staff who contribute directly to the quality of care in the Moses Cone emergency department. They are the true recipients of this national honor,” said Misty Freeman, nursing director, Moses Cone Hospital emergency department.
