Neonatal Pharmacists Have an Accredited Program — and Cone Health Helped Create It

Women’s Hospital becomes the first place in the country with an accredited pharmacy residency program focused on the needs of infants in intensive care.

Babies in the neonatal intensive care unit of Women’s Hospital will receive even more cutting-edge care thanks to a newly accredited residency program. Women’s Hospital has become the first place in the country to earn an accreditation through the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) in neonatal pharmacy.

“Having a resident in an accredited program gives us the opportunity to stay on top of new developments in the field. It allows us to participate in more research, to have that research published and participate in national conventions. This makes our hospital more active in the field of neonatal medicine and improves care for our patients,” says Residency Program Director Mindy Holcombe, PharmD.

What makes this program even more unique is that when pharmacy staff found out that an accreditation didn’t exist, they created one. They contacted ASHP and together formulated the characteristics that an accredited program in neonatology would need to have. After a recent survey, ASHP surveyors awarded Women’s Hospital a six-year accreditation cycle. That is the longest term for an accreditation that the society provides.

Caitlyn Simmons, PharmD, is the current resident in the accredited neonatology program. “This is a terrific experience. Being part of an accredited residency program not only allows me to provide the best care to our newborns, but to uncover ways to improve that care for them and for premature and critically ill infants everywhere,” says Simmons.

“This program is something that all of the pharmacists at Women’s Hospital pulled together to make happen,” says Holcombe. “We are pioneering the field and creating a new opportunity. Our residents will spend a year here. Then they are going to land great jobs and take exceptional care of patients.”
