New Director of Pediatric Intensive Care Unit Hopes to Ignite Passion in Others

Michael Cinoman, MD, quickly learned two things when he graduated from the University of Maryland School of Medicine: He enjoyed working in a hospital, and he loved caring for kids. He will continue both as director of the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) at The Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital.

“I became interested in pediatric critical care during my pediatric residency training,” says Cinoman. “I have always loved taking care of children and the PICU is where I felt patients really needed my help the most.”

Cinoman was the first pediatric intensivist at WakeMed Health and Hospitals in Raleigh and directed that unit for 15 years. While there, he was a senior vice president in charge of the hospital’s physician practice as well as the director of the Wake Area Health Education Center.  More recently, he held positions with BlueCross BlueShield of North Carolina, GlaxoSmithKline PLC, and Cempra, Inc. He was director of pediatric research at the latter.

Cinoman says he is thrilled to be at Cone Health and looks forward to returning to clinical medicine full-time as well as having the opportunity to mentor and supervise residents and students.  “At this point in my career, probably nothing is more personally satisfying than helping trainees learn, and come to appreciate and enjoy pediatric medicine,” adds Cinoman.

Cinoman’s postgraduate work includes a pediatric residency at the University of Maryland Hospital; a chief pediatric residency at Christiana Hospital, Medical Center of Delaware; and a fellowship in pediatric critical care at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. He is certified in pediatrics and pediatric critical care medicine by the American Board of Pediatrics.
