The State Approves Construction Projects at Moses Cone and Wesley Long Hospitals

The projects will improve patient care by modernizing facilities and restructuring where care is given.

The state of North Carolina has approved Cone Health’s plans to improve patient care through two major projects in Greensboro. One project will change the way Cone Health cares for women and infants. The other will modernize operating rooms at Wesley Long Hospital. The projects represent a major investment in patient care.

Cone Health has received the go-ahead to move services now provided at Women’s Hospital. Most will go into a combination of new and existing space at Moses Cone Hospital. This project requires extensive planning, which should begin later this year.

The Women’s and Children’s Hospital Project will include construction of a 118,000-square-foot tower on the south side of Moses Cone Hospital as well as renovation of existing space. Cone Health has worked with recent patients, staff, physicians and consultants to insure that the special atmosphere of today’s Women’s Hospital becomes part of this project.

The “hospital within a hospital” will feature a larger neonatal intensive care unit with individual private rooms. The hospital will have its own entrance, separate elevators, and a separate parking area for patients and families. The project should be completed by the end of 2020.

Cone Health is also beginning design work to replace 10 operating rooms at Wesley Long Hospital. The new operating rooms will be much larger than the 400-square-foot rooms they are replacing. The larger size makes it easier to handle the larger equipment and operating teams of today and tomorrow. The project also includes the addition of a specialized procedure room for urology procedures.

The new operating rooms should open in 2018, with the renovation of support space completed by spring 2019. This project will allow for more orthopedic, general cancer and bariatric surgery at Wesley Long Hospital.
