Cone Health Among Hospitals With “Great Neurosurgery and Spine Programs”

The accolades top off a year of excellence for the programs.

Becker’s Hospital Review has placed Cone Health on its 2016 list of “100 hospitals and health systems with great neurosurgery and spine programs.” This comes in the wake of CareChex® – an information service of Quantros, Inc. – naming The Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital third in the nation for spinal fusion and fourth for spinal surgery in its 2017 medical excellence ratings.

Spinal fusions and spinal surgeries are often done to alleviate severe back pain. “These are very high-tech, very complicated surgeries and conditions. It is very gratifying to know that some of the best neurosurgery teams in the country practice right here at Cone Health,” says Cone Health Senior Vice President and Chief Medical Officer Bruce Swords, MD, who also recognized orthopedic surgery teams who perform about 25 percent of spine surgeries. Last year 2,400 spinal procedures were performed at Cone Health.

Earlier this year, Cone Health was named a Blue Distinction Center+ for Spine Surgery by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina. This is part of the insurer’s Blue Distinction Specialty Care program. Blue Distinction Centers are nationally designated health care facilities shown to deliver improved patient safety and better health outcomes. This is based on objective measures developed by Blue Cross and Blue Shield companies with input from the medical community.

CareChex also put Moses Cone Hospital in the top 2 percent of hospitals in the nation, and first in the state, for medical excellence in stroke care, as well as the top 1 percent nationally for neurological care.

Cone Health, including Alamance Regional Medical Center, Annie Penn Hospital and The Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital, was also recognized for excellence in stroke care by Healthgrades. The leading hospital rating service named Cone Health among the top 5 percent in the nation for the treatment of stroke in its 2017 ratings. Physicians and care teams at Cone Health treated 1,245 strokes last year, the most in North Carolina.
