Treatment Plan

Some patients may choose to be evaluated in the Breast Multidisciplinary Clinic. One of the key aspects of the program is the weekly breast conferences. All doctors of the Breast Care Alliance that represent various disciplines review and discuss information about individual patients to determine the most effective treatment options in one setting. This collaboration enables the team of physicians to discuss the latest research and the best treatment recommendations for the individual.

After the breast conference, a core team of specialists will then discuss the recommendations and treatment options for the patient. This specialized team consists of a:

  • Surgeon.
  • Medical oncologist.
  • Radiation oncologist.
  • Nurse navigator.
  • Physical therapist.
  • Patient and family support healthcare professional.

Each member of this team meets with the patient, and together they provide a collaborative plan of care. The patient can speak with the entire care team about the benefits and risks of the treatment plan, and ask questions. A written plan of care is given to the patient and family that summarizes the team’s recommendations.

Accreditation

Four Breast Care Alliance PhysiciansThe National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC) is administered by the American College of Surgeons and grants accreditation to Cancer Centers that are committed to providing the best possible care to patients with diseases of the breast. Only roughly 200 Cancer Centers in the entire nation have earned this top honor.

The Cone Health Breast Care Alliance earned this prestigious distinction and exceeds the stringent quality standards established by the NAPBC. This includes a rigorous on-site survey reviewing the 27 standards required by the NAPBC in areas such as:

  • Leadership.
  • Clinical Management.
  • Research.
  • Community Outreach.
  • Professional Education.
  • Quality Management.

The NAPBC accreditation highlights Cone Health’s leadership and commitment to breast cancer, and it is an indication to the community that the best in today’s breast cancer care is available right here at Cone Health.

Clinical Trials

cancer clinical trialsSince 1987, Cone Health Cancer Center has participated in nationally sponsored clinical trials. We partner with the National Cancer Institute, universities, and private industry to provide the latest studies. Clinical trials are research studies that are conducted to test the effectiveness of new treatments, to find ways to prevent cancer, to screen high-risk patients, or to find better ways to treat side effects of cancer or its therapy. The national trials offered at Cone Health are conducted locally, and patients do not have to travel beyond our center to seek enrollment in cutting-edge clinical trials.

Information on clinical trials can be found by speaking with a member of the Breast Care Alliance.  Please contact the Cone Health Cancer Center Research Department at (336) 832-0821.

Resources

Each new patient is given a resource guide called “Journey.” The guide is written to support both the individual and the family with detailed information about what can be expected during treatment and what local resources are available, including information on financial and legal aid, transportation, counseling and support programs.
