We recognize that when a child is sick, the entire family is affected and needs support. So, we always take time to answer your questions about your child's health, treatment and progress.
Newborn Nursery
Our newborn nursery offers all the care and services a healthy baby needs. Upon delivery, your new arrival will be in the capable hands of our highly qualified and experienced staff. In fact, healthy newborns are cared for by Cone Health Pediatric Teaching Program faculty physicians as well as by local primary care physicians and pediatricians.
With our emphasis on family-centered care, parents and baby stay together following birth. We encourage a “skin-to-skin” approach as a way to help newborns adjust their body temperature and blood sugar, and get breastfeeding off to a good start.
Neonatal Intensive Care
It’s not uncommon for newborns to need extra care, and we are well equipped to handle the most complicated cases.
Cone Health Women’s Hospital has a 36-bed Level II and Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit staffed by an exceptional team of specialists. Premature newborns get all the attention they need from our board-certified neonatologists, neonatal nurse practitioners, physical therapists, registered nurses, lactation consultants, respiratory therapists, pharmacists, technicians and pediatric cardiologists.
In these special situations, you are not alone. Patients treated in our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and their families can count on follow-up services to help with the transition home, as well as ongoing care.
Pediatric Intensive Care
Up to age 18, severely ill or injured children have access to the broad range of inpatient services offered by our Pediatric Intensive Care Unit located at The Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital.
Our pediatric critical care board-certified attending physicians are on duty around-the-clock to treat traumatic injuries, severe asthma, respiratory distress, diabetes, seizures and other critical conditions. Our extended inpatient team of specialists includes faculty physicians from Cone Health’s Pediatric Teaching Program, pediatric residents from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, pediatric-trained pharmacists, clinical social workers, case managers and a child psychologist. Consultants with expertise in pediatric cardiology, pediatric neurology, pediatric endocrinology, pediatric GI medicine, pediatric surgery and ENT (ear nose and throat) surgery are readily available.
The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit offers state-of-the-art respiratory and cardiac support. Beds are sized for smaller bodies, with special pediatric equipment available for respiratory and cardiovascular treatment. When we treat a child, the whole family is considered an important part of the care-giving team. And since parental involvement usually lessens the child's anxiety, we encourage parents to stay with their child in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and the pediatric inpatient areas.
To facilitate overall healing and wellness, a licensed recreational therapist and a pediatric psychologist are available to help our young patients. A well-appointed playroom, thanks to community support, gives your child a safe place to have fun during his or her recovery.
Children’s Emergency Department
Our Children’s Emergency Department is prepared to handle a wide range of childhood accidents and emergencies. Whether it’s a sudden illness, sports injury or household accident, we offer exceptional emergency medical care in a child-friendly environment.
Located at Moses Cone Hospital, our specially equipped department is staffed 24/7 by a superb team of pediatric emergency medicine-trained physicians.
From the bright décor to our compassionate staff, our goal is to speed recovery and ease the anxiety typically associated with an emergency room visit.
