Children's Services - Community Support

Pediatric PlayroomOur well-appointed children’s playroom at Moses Cone Hospital is furnished thanks to the generosity of community donors. We greatly appreciate your willingness to help our young patients cope with the stress of hospitalization.

Donations may be left at the central information desk on the first floor or delivered directly to the children’s unit on the sixth floor. Contact the Recreation Therapy Department prior to delivery at (336) 832-7207. Please be sure to attach your name and address to the donation so that we can send you an acknowledgement.

Donated Items We Can Accept

Please follow our important toy safety and infection control guidelines. We can accept:

  • New toys, books and games
  • "Gently" used plastic toys that can be washed, such as Fisher-Price, Playskool, Little Tikes, etc.
  • New and used video games for Play Station, PSII and XBOX.
  • DVDs (PG and G-rated).
  • New stuffed animals.

Donations We Are Unable To Accept

Items we cannot accept include:

  • Used items such as fabric dolls, stuffed animals, cardboard games, books and puzzles.
  • Rubber/latex balloons because of choking dangers and latex allergies. Only mylar balloons are acceptable.
  • Toys with many small parts; toys that can break and leave sharp edges; or electrical, spark-producing/friction-producing toys (because of fire regulations).
  • We do not accept toys that depict violence in any way. No guns, swords, "action" or fighting figures will be accepted.
  • Religious materials. Because we serve children of various faiths and beliefs, we cannot accept materials with a religious theme.
  • No gifts of food are allowed because many of our patients are on special diets.

Age Appropriate Donation Suggestions

Referring to the recommended age labeling on toys can help when choosing items. Use your imagination to think of what the children would enjoy while recovering in the hospital. Have fun!

Please note if you or your volunteer group would like to do a community service project to support our youngest patients, our Recreation Therapy department must approve your project. Please call (336) 832-7207 if you have questions.

Adopt A Frog Program

Frog Positioning AidA “Frog” is a beanbag positioning aid that is shaped like one of those amiable amphibians. Originally designed by a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit nurse, a Frog helps with comfortable positioning of a premature baby. The Frog may be placed around the infant's head, neck or hips. It can be adjusted for special positioning needs, or used as an extra set of hands, giving the infant a snuggled feeling.

For each donation of $15, the Family Support Network of Central Carolina can purchase a Frog for an infant in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit who needs one. Click here to read more and make a secure online donation.
