Q: Even after sleeping 5 hours I get up tired.  I am 55. How many hours should I sleep? How do I prevent from being a light sleeper? Any light noise gets me up. My brains keep thinking about daily life issues. How do I get it to stop and relax? I am healthy but I still have to get up at night to go to the restroom.

A: Most healthy adults do best with 6-8 hours of sleep per night. Getting ready for bed when you are a light sleeper means having a good quiet, dark bedroom. Unwind by avoiding stressful issues, caffeine, alcohol and intense exercise as bedtime approaches. Do something pleasantly distracting- puzzles, listening to music, reading something good but not too exciting may help. A sleep medicine can be helpful. Also, ask your primary doctor about referral to a clinical psychologist who practices cognitive behavioral therapy as a technique shown to help insomnia.
