A big thank you to all participants and volunteers that made the 2016 Women's Only Walk & Run a success. The event at Women’s Hospital featured 2,111 participants who raised $122,387.30 so that more area women can receive mammograms to screen for breast cancer.
Sarah Squire of Winston-Salem took first place on the USA Track & Field-certified course coming in at 22 minutes, 14 seconds. That was 23 seconds faster than Lori Stevenson of Greensboro, who finished second.
Participant registrations from the Women’s Only 5 K Walk & Run support the Cone Health Mammography Scholarship Fund. Each year, the fund provides about 600 women with screening mammograms that they would otherwise be unable to afford.
“Mammography is the gold standard in diagnosing breast cancer,” says Women’s Hospital President Debbie Cunningham. “A lack of money shouldn’t be a reason for not getting this lifesaving exam.”
The cancer experts at Cone Health Cancer Center treat more cases of breast cancer than any other type. Cone Health treated 904 cases of breast cancer in 2015. Mammograms are a crucial part of early detection.
“We are very good at treating breast cancer at Cone Health Cancer Center. And early detection through mammography is very important,” says Vice President of Oncology Services Skip Hislop. “And this event makes mammograms possible for hundreds of women in our community.”
