What Causes Itching?

Itching, which dermatologists call pruritus, is the sensation that provokes scratching. It can be a symptom of dermatologic disease or a systemic disorder, and severe itching should be evaluated by a physician. Examples of skin diseases that may cause itching include:

  • Extreme dryness.
  • Atopic dermatitis (eczema).
  • Psoriasis.
  • Bug bites.
  • Hives.

Winter Itch

Winter itch is a common condition in which itching is caused by dry skin. It's most commonly seen during the colder times of the year, when we use more indoor heating and have decreased humidity. It is most common on the lower legs, but it can occur anywhere on the body. Winter itch can be treated by using moisturizing creams regularly, and moisturizing can be especially effective when creams are applied after showering. Our team of dermatologists can help you determine if winter itch is causing your symptoms, and they can recommend effective moisturizers and strategies to relieve your symptoms.
