What are Warts?

Warts are growths caused by a viral infection. They commonly appear on the hands, the fingers, the sole of the foot, the lower legs and the face. They are spread from person to person.

There are many different types of warts, depending on the exact virus that causes the growth. For example, plantar warts, on the bottom of the foot, are caused by a different virus than flat warts on the face.

Wart Treatments

Warts are treated by destroying the infected skin. The most effective treatments are administered by dermatologists, and the right the wart's size, location and persistence. Treatment options may include:

  • Cryotherapy (freezing the wart with liquid nitrogen).
  • Topical medications like salicylic acid.
  • Laser therapy to destroy wart tissue.
  • Minor surgical procedures to remove wart tissue.
  • Immunotherapy to help the body fight off the wart virus.
