Drug Allergy

At the Allergy & Asthma Center of North Carolina, we use a detailed history from the patient in conjunction with skin testing to look for evidence of drug allergies. This can help identify a patient’s risk of receiving a medication in the future and open new classes of medication to treat particular conditions.

Drug Challenges

A drug challenge is a test that can help identify whether or not a patient is allergic to a specific medication. During a drug challenge, the patient takes the drug under close supervision. Our team of allergy experts will observes the patient closely and monitor them for any signs of allergic reactions.

In certain instances, depending on prior testing and the patient's clinical history, we can perform drug challenges in our offices to remove drug allergies from patients’ charts. This can open more treatment options in the future, such another entire class of antibiotics in the case of penicillin allergy. We have private rooms for the drug challenges, many of which include a TV.
