OB/Gyn Junior Faculty Position

Cone Health Women's & Children's Center at Moses Cone Hospital recruits two to three Family Medicine physicians as Junior Faculty in their well-established OB/GYN Faculty Practice. Our team includes OB/GYNs, OB Fellowship-trained Family Medicine physicians, certified nurse midwives, nurse practitioners and physician assistants.

Our robust service delivers approximately 2800 babies a year. We service several counties with our high-risk clinic and level 3 NICU. The fellow can expect to be exposed to and feel comfortable with vaginal deliveries, operative vaginal deliveries, cesarean sections, tubal ligations as well as managing diabetes, preterm labor, preeclampsia, chronic hypertension, multiple gestations, placentation abnormalities, thyroid disease and many other medical problems complicating pregnancy.

The Women’s & Children’s Center at Moses Cone Hospital has its own Emergency Room where women can receive treatment for obstetrical complaints. The fellow will be proficient at doing bedside ultrasounds, managing pregnancy of unknown location and other acute events. The fellow will also see patients in the office setting and be comfortable evaluating pelvic pain, managing abnormal bleeding, performing office procedures and all forms of contraception. This education will be invaluable as one enters practice and encounters these complaints routinely.


  • Successful completion of Family Medicine Residency with three letters of recommendations
  • Completion of 80 vaginal deliveries
  • Assisted on 10 cesarean sections
  • Completion of 10 circumcisions


The goals of the program are to:

  • Learn and develop skills in advanced obstetrics, including surgical skills, while caring for patients of the OB/GYN Faculty Service.
  • Develop teaching skills and experience in obstetrical care applicable to Family Medicine residents and students.

To these ends, the Junior Faculty member has an active role in all aspects of the OB/GYN faculty program, including supervision of residents and students in both inpatient and ambulatory settings.


  • Manage team of residents and students on labor and delivery shifts
  • Evaluate and treat patients in clinics, approximately 10 per half-day
  • Prepare and present didactic teaching sessions
  • Participate in rounds
  • Take night and weekend call (approximately 4-5 per month)

Key goals for the OB/Gyn fellowship are to train family physicians to be able to teach OB/Gyn in family medicine residency education and/or practice in remote areas where a high degree of skill and independence is needed.

  • Family Medicine clinic—continuity patients shared with Dr. Pratt, work ins, precepting FM residents, and supervising the circumcision clinic

  • Center for Women’s Healthcare at Renaissance – Private practice office
  • Center for Women’s Healthcare at Stoney Creek—Private practice office
  • Center for Women’s Healthcare at Kernersville—Private practice office

Ob/Gyn Faculty

The obstetric rotations are coordinated by a team of maternity care providers that includes obstetricians, family physicians, and certified nurse midwives. This team approach emphasizes all aspects of obstetrics. The Women's & Children's Center at Moses Cone Hospital has a state-of-the-art ultrasound suite providing 4-D imaging and perinatology consulting services. Fellows will be able to work with the perinatologists and follow their patients when high-risk issues arise.

Tanya S. Pratt, MD - OB/Gyn Faculty - Dr. Pratt received her BS in Biology from High Point University. After receiving her medical degree from the University of North Carolina School of Medicine in Chapel Hill, Dr. Pratt completed her residency at Riverside Regional Medical Center in OB/GYN and Family Medicine. She is board-certified in family medicine as well as in obstetrics and gynecology. Dr. Pratt is a graduate of the Cone Health Physician Leadership Academy and is currently the Chief of the OB/GYN Service at the Women’s & Children's Center. She took over the role of Medical Director of the Faculty Practice in February 2016. Her interests include teaching evidence-based medicine, performing office procedures, and decreasing the primary Cesarean section rate.

Walidah Karim, MSN, FNP, CNM - Walidah Karim, CNM, is a certified nurse midwife and faculty practice OB/GYN assistant director at Cone Health Women’s & Children's Center at Moses Cone Hospital. She earned a Bachelor of Science in nursing from University of Arizona in 1995, and a Master of Science in nursing with a family nurse practitioner degree from University of Arizona in 1998. She completed her nurse-midwifery education in 2004 at Frontier School of Midwifery and Family Nursing in Hyden, Ky. Walidah is board-certified by the American College of Nurse-Midwives.

Salary & Benefits

The fellow receives a salary of $60,000. Benefits include 20 days of sick and vacation time, one week of CME, $1500 of CME funds and occurrence malpractice coverage.
