The Cone Health oncology pharmacy residency takes pride in the development of trained clinical oncology pharmacists. The philosophy we follow each year is to introduce and challenge the resident to oncology practices while building upon the resident’s strengths and interests. At the Cone Health Cancer Center, the pharmacist plays a critical role in the development of patient treatment options ensuring the patient receives evidence based and cost-effective cancer treatment. The collaboration among pharmacy and other disciplines within the cancer program allows pharmacy to help drive key initiatives providing optimal oncology pharmacotherapy.

Program Purpose

PGY2 pharmacy residency programs build on Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education and PGY1 pharmacy residency programs to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists in specialized areas of practice. PGY2 residencies provide residents with opportunities to function independently as practitioners by conceptualizing and integrating accumulated experience and knowledge and incorporating both into the provision of patient care or other advanced practice settings. Residents who successfully complete an accredited PGY2 pharmacy residency are prepared for advanced patient care, academic, or other specialized positions, along with board certification, if available.

Program Overview

The PGY2 Oncology program at the Cone Health Cancer Center is a 12-month appointment providing advanced training in contemporary oncology practice by focusing on patient care, clinical research, administrative services and education. Residents, working with experienced preceptors, are involved in all phases of chemotherapy management including preparation, patient treatment, supportive care and reimbursement of services. Within a flexible framework, residents complete rotations and select electives both on and off-site.

The Cone Health Cancer Center's outpatient services include medical oncology, supplemented with a large chemotherapy infusion suite, to handle all chemotherapy and related supportive care infusions. Our radiation oncology department offers state-of-the-art radiation therapy technology, including TomoTherapy, SRS, HDR and IMRT radiation services. Wesley Long Hospital, located adjacent to the Cone Health Cancer Center, has a dedicated floor for oncology patients for the administration of chemotherapy as well as the care of complications related to chemotherapy or malignancy. Similar services are offered at our three satellite clinic locations within 30 miles of the main campus.

Resident training will encompass hematologic and solid malignancies, symptom management, pharmacy administration, and investigational drug management. Our pharmacy team provides integrated oncology care and is accountable for optimal drug therapy outcomes of cancer patients. The resident will also have involvement in precepting pharmacy students from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, High Point University School of Pharmacy, Campbell University School of Pharmacy and PGY1 pharmacy residents. The resident will have the opportunity to conduct a major research project, present lectures and in-services, and participate in journal club and the P&T Committee.

All Cone Health pharmacy residencies participate in the National Matching Service (NMS) match program. Applicants should register and apply through the central residency application ASHP's PhORCAS.

When applying through PhORCAS, prospective residents should complete the following:

    • Provide a current curriculum vitae and letter of intent stating why he/she has decided to pursue specialty training in oncology pharmacy and how a PGY2 oncology pharmacy residency at Cone Health Cancer Center will aid in achieving his/her career goals.
    • Request an official transcript of your grades to be forwarded directly to the PhORCAS Transcripts Department.
    • Ask three references that are familiar with your professional and academic background to complete reference documents in PhORCAS. We prefer that you ask clinical faculty members and/or an employer to provide your references.
      • We request that your references include comments in at least 10 of the 13 comment boxes on the form in place of writing a traditional letter of recommendation.
