Residency of Maternal-Child Nursing

Skin to SkinIf you’re interested in spending your career caring for moms and babies, choose Cone Health’s Residency of Maternal-Newborn Nursing. You’ll further your education and gain the experience and skills to become an adept maternal-newborn nurse.

What You’ll Learn

Grow your skills as a maternal-newborn nurse as you improve your assessment and critical-thinking skills through interactive learning strategies. You’ll also gain insight into Cone Health’s family-centered approach to pregnancy and birth care.

What To Expect

As a new graduate registered nurse in the Residency of Maternal-Child Nursing, you’ll participate in:

  • Core classes in fetal monitoring, care during labor and birth, newborn care, breastfeeding support, perinatal diabetes and more, with opportunities for continuing education hours
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program™ certification
  • Shadowing experienced nurses in lactation support and high-risk pregnancy care
  • Clinical rotations through the following units at Alamance Regional Medical Center and Women’s Hospital:
    • Antepartum/high-risk pregnancy care
    • Maternity admissions unit (similar to an OB-GYN emergency department)
    • Birthing suites (labor and delivery)
    • Mother-baby unit (postpartum)
    • Newborn nursery and neonatal intensive care unit (NICU)

Expect to spend 24 to 32 hours in nursing units and four to 12 hours participating in residency-specific activities each week. Learn more about nursing residency at Cone Health.

After the Residency

After completing the Residency of Maternal-Child Nursing, apply to a Cone Health obstetrical or newborn care department of your choice and proceed through the standard interview process. Stay in touch with your peers and continue your learning with monthly workshops and paid time away from the hospital engaging in fun and rejuvenating activities with fellow new grad nurses and a mentor leader.

To apply for Cone Health’s New Graduate Nurse Residency, follow these steps:

**All Internal candidates must submit a manager reference in addition to the three clinical references. Have them use the internal reference form [Word doc] and then email them to Nursing Recruitment.
