Shanon Wright, Moses Cone Healthy Weight and Wellness
Tell us about your Wellness Superhero journey.
I am nominating myself because I have been on my own journey for my health and wellness. I recently went through some personal things and I lost almost 30 pounds because of my stress. I’m 5'10 and dropped to 118 pounds. I was eating, but maybe only once a day. I took charge of the things going on in my life, and I have now put on 10 pounds of what I lost and I am working on getting back to my healthy weight in a healthy manner.
What inspired you to get healthy and stay healthy?
I have 4 amazing daughters that I want to be a good influence on. They need to see that I am a strong person and that I am taking care of myself so that I can take care of them.
Which Cone Health Wellness programs have you participated in?
I have done the LiveLifeWell suggestions with meals and exercising. I have learned a lot through using the digital coach.
Are there activities or hobbies you now participate in that you didn’t before?
I now routinely go to the gym and do yoga at home with my girls. We have brought several exercise items into the home that we all use. We spend time talking about things that we have experienced (good and bad) through the week, and what may have benefitted the situation if we had done something different.
Have your doctor, family, friends and co-workers provided support along the way? If so, how?
I have had huge family support. They offer help with my daughters if needed, and just a hug now-and-then can really lift you up - no words needed. My friends are always willing to talk and my physician at my GYN office is amazing as well. They have offered counseling if needed and have been truly supportive in giving me information about outside sources that I may benefit from. My nurse even hugged me when I needed it the other day at my appointment.
If you could say one thing to other employees to inspire them, what would you say?
Never give up on yourself, no matter what is going on in your life. If you have others who depend on you, remember that you can’t fill someone else’s cup when yours is empty. And never assume you are alone in anything.
