Boosting Morale: The Value of Employee Recognition

Boosting Morale: The Value of Employee Recognition

When employees feel appreciated, corporate culture can thrive. Employee recognition efforts can decrease workplace stress and increase morale, motivation and retention.

Research shows employees who are recognized feel more valued, work harder and are far more likely to stay with their current employers. High engagement workplaces are more profitable, too.

While employees seek good pay and benefits, corporate recognition programs do not have to be costly. Employees value authentic demonstrations of gratitude, like a personalized thank you, from managers and peers.

Three ways to boost employee morale include:

Reconsidering one-size-fits-all approaches: Whether an employee has achieved a milestone or made a significant contribution, flexible recognition programs empower managers to tailor rewards and act in the moment. Depending on the employee, a personalized note, shared news among colleagues or time off to enjoy a hobby may be most appreciated.

Leveraging the power of peer recognition: By encouraging employees to recognize each other for their extra efforts, employers can create a culture of appreciation. Employee-to-employee “high five” or “cheers” programs encourage colleagues to uplift one another with positive feedback.

Making time for shared celebrations: Gathering as a group strengthens bonds among colleagues. An outdoor picnic, themed lunch or fun team-building activity are great ways to show appreciation while reinforcing the value of teamwork.

“When thinking about employee recognition, consider what you want your employees to tell others about work,” concludes Jacqueline Heyward, BS, MSM, Cone Health Corporate and Community Health and Wellness Employee Services Liaison. “When employees feel appreciated, many become natural recruiters, which is especially important in today’s tight job market.”
