How to Support Mental Well-Being in the Workplace

Supporting Mental Well-Being

Is your team silently struggling with stress and burnout?

Mental health challenges are widespread. Each year, more than one in five U.S. adults lives with a mental illness, according to the National Institute of Mental Health.

Stress, anxiety and depression affect both work and life. For working adults, these challenges can undermine well-being, workplace relationships and job performance.

Mental Health Issues Impact People at Home and on the Job

A quarter of employees reports ongoing stress or excessive anxiety, according to the Anxiety & Depression Association of America. While three-fourths say their personal life is affected, half also struggle with workplace performance and quality of work.

Mental and Physical Well-Being Are Closely Connected

Research highlights a strong link between the two.

“It’s important to recognize the strong tie…between physical health and emotional health,” says David Gutterman, PhD, a clinical psychologist with LeBauer Behavioral Medicine, during a WFMY News 2 interview.

While positive mental health can “help you heal,” poor mental health can have a “negative impact on bodily systems,” he adds.

Mental health struggles may contribute to an unhealthy diet, sleep disruptions and chronic elevated cortisol levels, which can compromise physical health.

Recognizing and Addressing Mental Health Issues Is Critical

Many people carry a heavy mental burden without recognition or diagnosis. Taking personal inventory or gently pointing out changes to loved ones can help clarify concerns, advises Dr. Gutterman.

Symptoms of anxiety may include excessive worry, fear or panic. Depression may present as persistent sadness, hopelessness or helplessness. Other warning signs include social withdrawal and loss of interest in favorite activities.

Employers Play a Key Role in Support

Employers can reduce the stigma associated with mental health. Management can make a difference by undertaking promotional campaigns to build awareness, encouraging employees to seek self-care and educating leaders on helping workers with available resources.

By fostering supportive workplaces and connecting employees to professional services, such as Cone Health’s Employee Assistance Counseling Program, employers can meaningfully improve both individual well-being and workplace health.
