The Importance of Light in the Workplace

As we get ready to navigate some of the darkest and shortest days of the year, finding ways to get more sunlight can be very beneficial to both our mental and physical health. This is especially true in the workplace. Most adults spend most of their time indoors, and most are at work more than any other place.

There are many benefits of natural light. Some of those include increased vitamin D intake, better eye health and better sleep. Research by the Northwestern University of Chicago found that office workers who were exposed only to artificial light had about 46 minutes less sleep per night on average than those working in natural light.

Providing spaces that give plenty of sunlight and views of the outdoors can create a calming environment and a happier, healthier employee. According to a study conducted by Alan Hedge, a professor in the Department of Design and Environmental Analysis at Cornell, workers in day-lit environments reported an 84% drop in symptoms of eyestrain, headaches, and blurred vision -- all of which can detract from productivity.

So, the question is, how do we get more sunlight into the workplace? Here are a few tips to try.

  • Always opt for larger windows when possible. If larger windows aren’t available, consider hanging mirrors opposite of existing windows so natural light can be reflected off of windows to spread light further.
  • Consider bringing the outdoors in. Even pictures of the outdoors can help create a relaxing environment for staff. If possible, try to get outside, even for a few minutes, during breaks during the day.
  • Keep window curtains and blinds to a minimum. This will allow for as much light as possible to enter.
  • Use light paint colors on the wall. It can give the illusion of more natural light.
  • Experiment with different lighting and light bulbs. The best lighting must strike a balance between brightness and comfort.
