Open Enrollment: It’s Time for Your Annual Health Benefits Checkup

Open enrollment offers employees an opportunity to review benefit plan options, consider healthcare needs and make choices that can save money and provide better coverage in the long run.
According to recent studies, while most employees enroll in the same plan every year, more intend to scale back on health benefits to save money this fall. Experts say two of the biggest mistakes you can make are skimping on coverage or sticking with the same plan without comparing options.
“Investing in a solid health care plan and preventative care can save your health and your wallet,” says Walidah Karim-Rhoades, DNP, RN, CNM, Cone Health’s executive director of primary care. “Putting off or skipping routine care, like regular check-ups and screenings, can lead to costly health emergencies.”
Open enrollment season is a great time for an annual health benefits checkup. When considering alternatives, keep the following in mind:
- Individual or family changes: As you add or drop dependents or a spouse, ensure you have ample coverage for everyone on your plan. While it can be tempting to choose the same plan as your co-workers, your plan needs to work for you.
- Health plan updates: Benefits can vary from year to year. Take time to review changes to health plans, including premiums, copays and other costs. Also, consider changes to offerings, like in-network providers, wellness programs or telehealth. Become familiar with all your options.
- The full range of benefits: Open enrollment typically includes additional benefit options, like vision, dental or healthcare savings accounts. If you are unsure what plans may be best for you, talk to your benefits department. Ask about coverage differences or unfamiliar terms.
As well, open enrollment season is a great opportunity to make sure everyone on your plan has a primary care provider.
“Regardless of age or health condition, primary care supports you on your journey to well-being,” concludes Karim-Rhoades. “Building a trusted medical relationship helps you stay on track with the care you need.”
