Preventing Injuries Before They Start: What to Know About Muscle and Joint Health

Woman Stretching indoors.

Could you be putting your joints at risk without realizing it?

Warmer weather often means getting more active: more outdoor exercise, yard work and daily movement.

But jumping back into activity too quickly can strain muscles and joints. Without proper preparation, everyday tasks can lead to soreness or injury.

Muscles and joints need time to adjust as activity increases. In a WFMY interview, Cone Health orthopedist Steven Bokshan, MD, compares the body to a cold car engine on a winter morning. When muscles are stiff or inactive, they need time to warm up before performing at their best.

Knowing how to reduce the risk of injury – and when to seek orthopedic care – can help keep your body moving well.

Warm Up Before Activity

Cold muscles are more prone to strain. Gentle stretching helps prepare the body for more strenuous activity. As Dr. Bokshan often reminds patients, “motion is lotion” when it comes to keeping joints healthy.

Lift the Right Way

Back and shoulder injuries are often caused by improper lifting techniques. Whether moving supplies at work or tackling projects at home, using your legs to lift helps reduce strain and prevent injury.

Pace Yourself

Many injuries happen when people try to do too much physical work in a short period of time. Spreading yard work, gardening and spring cleaning over several days can help prevent overuse injuries.

Listen to Your Body

Some muscle soreness is normal when starting a new activity. For minor strains, rest, ice, compression and elevation (RICE) may help reduce inflammation.

If swelling, sharp pain or discomfort interferes with work, sleep or other daily activities, it may signal something more serious requiring medical care.
