Self-Care – The Best Gift You Can Give Yourself This Holiday Season

According to a recent National Alliance on Mental Health survey, sixty percent of Americans say their mental health dips during the holidays. By being mindful of your feelings, connecting with people, setting boundaries and committing to a healthy lifestyle, you can improve your outlook this season.
“Self-care starts with being empowered about your decision-making, especially during busy holidays,” shares Jonathan Freeman, Cone Health’s spiritual care and wholeness
director. “By being the author of your own experiences, you have the opportunity to engage more meaningfully with loved ones and to let go of traditions that may be too stressful.”
“If you feel overwhelmed this year, openly communicate what you are thinking with others ahead of time,” continues Freeman. “Let family or friends know what you want to do differently and explain why.”
“As we emerge from the pandemic and continue to redefine our new normal, some may feel stressed or burned out,” adds Shevene Bryant, MS, LCMHCS, manager of Cone Health’s Employee Assistance Counseling Program. “While the holidays can be a time of celebration, they can also be a time of reflection and grief as well.”
If you are experiencing daily headaches, sleep or appetite issues, or suddenly have high blood pressure, you may be experiencing burnout, according to Bryant. Burnout can cause you to feel disorganized, indecisive or forgetful, or even angry, anxious or depressed.
“While employers can offer flexible work arrangements, counseling services and other incentives, like bonuses or perks, employees can take charge of their own mental health, too,” adds Bryant. “Carve out time to think about what self-care looks like for you. What can you do to reduce stress and increase joy?”
Finally, being mindful of your daily habits can go a long way to keeping you healthy, according to Jamie Athas, Cone Health’s director of employee health and wellness.
“Try not to stray too far from your daily routine during the holidays,” concludes Athas. “Self-care can help you maintain your physical, mental and emotional reserves to help with managing stress during a busy holiday season.”
