Smart Wearables

Three Benefits of Smart Wearables in Industrial Workplaces

In manufacturing, logistics and construction, worker safety and productivity are paramount. Emerging technologies in wearable devices – including smart helmets, glasses and vests – are transforming how industries approach these goals. These innovations enhance physical safety, optimize learning and improve operational efficiency, creating a win-win for workers and employers alike.

Smart helmets are a game-changer for safety: Smart helmets equipped with sensors, cameras and communication tools transform workplace safety by providing immediate hazard alerts and monitoring. For instance, by analyzing head movements, some models detect fatigue, a factor in more than 1 in 10 workplace injuries, according to the National Safety Council. When workers receive notifications to take breaks, this proactive approach can help reduce accidents caused by exhaustion.

AR glasses revolutionize training and operations: Augmented Reality (AR) glasses are another powerful tool. Since these devices overlay digital information onto the user’s field of vision, employees have hands-free access to instructions and receive feedback right away. In addition, training programs using AR and Virtual Reality (VR) have shown impressive results. A PwC study found that VR-trained employees completed tasks four times faster than in traditional classroom settings with higher retention rates. Also, AR and VR simulations enable workers to practice handling hazardous scenarios in a safe environment, preparing them for high-stakes situations without on-the-job risks.

Smart vests offer real-time monitoring for health and safety: Vests embedded with sensors can monitor vital signs, like heart rate, and rapidly detect potential health issues, such as overheating or poor posture. Also, they can be used to identify patterns that lead to accidents and improve workplace ergonomics.

“As smart wearable technologies continue to evolve, adoption will likely accelerate and allow for even safer and more efficient workplaces,” concludes Jacqueline Heyward, BS, MSM, Corporate and Community Health and Wellness Employer Services Liaison. “From a clinical perspective, these technologies have the potential to transform occupational health and employee well-being.”
