Family Medicine Residency Program
Message From The Director
At the Cone Health Family Medicine Residency Program, we value the concept of balance between service and education. We exist for two complementary reasons: to educate high quality family physicians and to help serve the healthcare needs of our community. Thus, residents should expect to serve and be served.
We emphasize the traditional principles of Family Medicine. We value comprehensive, continuous, coordinated, preventive, community-oriented healthcare which is focused on the family unit. Those time-honored concepts take on a new life in the form of the Patient Centered Medical Home.
These principles of Family Medicine are best taught at the Family Medicine Center, the longitudinal care centerpiece of our residency. Block rotations also provide skills in hospital care and other specialty areas, which enhance the Family Physician's knowledge of comprehensive patient care. We expose residents to a wide variety of teachers - i.e. academic family physicians, private community family physicians and sub-specialists - in their offices and at the hospital.
Our program's philosophy
In order to prepare our graduates for the current practice environment, our Family Medicine Center participates in several managed care plans in addition to traditional fee for service. We also provide care for the uninsured and the underinsured. Our program values flexibility, diversity and the ability to adapt to change. We feel residents will need these attributes in order to cope with a changing healthcare system.
Finally, and perhaps most importantly, we encourage residents to lead balanced lives. An annual residency retreat provides sharp focus to the roles of work and play in our lives and is evidence of our commitment to help our residents discover their own unique balances.
Our goals are simple: We want to help our residents become good family physicians, good significant others, good parents and healthy individuals who will be assets to the communities in which they practice.
