IMPORTANT NOTICE: Please do not use Cone Health emergency departments or urgent care centers for Covid-19 testing to avoid long wait times and enable clinical teams to focus on critical care needs. Get options for testing here.

Our residents and faculty maintain active lives outside of the clinical setting. Explore below to see some our recent social, service, and international activities!

Social Activities

Our residents and faculty strive to balance their busy work schedules with time for family, friends, and social activities. We schedule several seasonal events to ensure adequate time to become fully acquainted with colleagues and families.

In addition, interns have a long-standing tradition of meeting outside of work on at least a monthly basis for more fun and games.

Each fall we do a retreat with all the residents, faculty, and their families. This is a wonderful time to get to know one another better and enjoy some time together outside of our typical work setting!

International Opportunities

Since 1999, our residents have had the opportunity to participate in short-term international medical mission trips to remote areas of Honduras as part of teams led by Dr. Wayne Hale. We began with Reitoca, a small village in the mountains southeast of Tegucigalpa. Six brigades worked in Limón, a Garifuna village on the northeast coast, where malaria and intestinal parasites are the predominant illnesses.

During these trips our residents not only learn about travel medicine and the treatment of tropical diseases, but more importantly, are exposed to the culture and language of a group that forms an increasing proportion of the U.S. immigrant population. The experience also provides an opportunity to improve Spanish language skills. We have recently been working with Shoulder to Shoulder, whose clinic in Santa Lucia accommodates larger teams and has more opportunities for teaching and working with the community.

For those interested in training more thoroughly in international health, we offer the International Health Area of Concentration. For further information about this or about international electives, please contact Carina Brown, MD.
