Family Medicine Center
The Family Medicine Center, located in a 13,450-square-foot, one-story building on Church Street, is the clinical practice site for our residency program. The Center was specifically designed for teaching ambulatory care medicine, as well as to provide a model office environment for our residents. Our Family Medicine Center is conveniently located adjacent to The Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital and is within the general vicinity of the majority of private physicians' offices in Greensboro.
The Center houses 18 exam rooms, 3 consult rooms, physician offices, laboratory, business office, nurse clinic, faculty offices and rooms for family counseling, educational conferences, precepting and video monitoring. Each patient care room has a dedicated computer and large screen monitor. Resident and staff lounges and men's and women's locker rooms are also located within the facility.
The Family Medicine Center is staffed by experienced medical office personnel and residency program administration staff. On site we have a Psychologist, Pharmacist, Nutritionist, Health Coach, Licensed Clinical Social Worker and a Population Health and Quality Specialist. We have the ability to perform ultrasounds, various skin surgeries, IUD and Nexplanon insertions, endometrial biopsies and joint injections.
The physician faculty and residents provide care for a wide cross-section of the population of Greensboro and surrounding Guilford County. Our payer mix includes: 36 percent Medicaid, 17 percent Medicare, 27 percent Managed Care and 20 percent self pay.
Nurses / Certified Medical Assistants
The Cone Health Family Medicine Center is staffed with registered nurses and certified medical assistants. A group of highly trained, dedicated professionals, they play an important role in both patient care and resident education. The nurses are knowledgeable in patient care, including the "nuts and bolts" of ordering tests, therapies, consultations and equipment. They are also aware of the various social service programs available in the community and play an essential role in triage and follow-up. Because of their many years of service, our nurses can provide insight into the personalities and histories of our patients for the residents who are just getting to know them.
Front Office Staff
Practicing in today's healthcare environment is challenging, to say the least. Not only do our residents need to be competent clinically, but they need to have a good understanding of the "business" of medicine. This is where the front office staff is invaluable. These professionals keep the Family Medicine Center moving along smoothly, registering and checking out 80 to 100 patients and answering hundreds of calls daily. Additionally, the staff are up to date on the latest rules and regulations of documentation, coding and insurance coverage, making them an important resource of daily feedback to the residents.
The Family Medicine Center contains a laboratory with a moderate complexity CLIA certification and is equipped with a dual-head teaching microscope. Our laboratory is staffed by Robert Busick, CMA. Robert teaches residents the basics of ordering, coding and interpreting various lab tests, and clinical staff competencies. Our lab offers a Coumadin Clinic, phlebotomy and multiple point of care tests (A1Cs, glucose, rapid strep, wet preps, urinalysis, urine micros, urine pregnancy tests and KOH skin tests).
Wanda Thomas, MT (ASCP) is the FMC Lab Consultant. Her responsibilities include CLIA/COLA competencies/compliance, reviews lab controls/logs and provides staff education.
