Program Overview and Rotations
The Cone Health PGY2 Pediatric Pharmacy Residency is located within the Women’s and Children’s Center at Moses Cone Hospital. This brand-new, state of the art facility is scheduled to open in February 2020. Our year-long program is designed to prepare the resident to develop advanced knowledge, clinical skills, and expertise to serve as a pediatric pharmacy specialist on a multidisciplinary team. This will be accomplished by working closely with physicians, pharmacists, and administrators.
The resident will be involved in precepting pharmacy students from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, High Point University School of Pharmacy, Campbell University School of Pharmacy and PGY1 pharmacy residents. Formal classroom teaching experiences are required at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (Adult Nurse Practitioner Pharmacotherapy) and the Fred Wilson School of Pharmacy at High Point University. In addition, the resident will conduct practice-based research and lead quality improvement initiatives.
After an orientation period, the resident will work closely with the program director to develop a schedule that is tailored to match the resident’s personal goals as well as the residency requirements. Residents will train in core rotations and will have opportunities to rotate through other clinical areas, all of which are listed below. In addition, our collaborative relationships with nearby university teaching hospitals allow the resident to experience a variety of specialty patient populations including ECMO, hematology, oncology, and transplant. The program structure will remain flexible throughout the year to ensure that all goals and learning opportunities are accomplished.

All Cone Health pharmacy residencies participate in the National Matching Service (NMS) match program. Applicants should register and apply through the central residency application, ASHP’s PhORCAS.
In addition to applying through PhORCAS, prospective Cone Health residents must apply to be a Cone Health employee.

When applying through PhORCAS, prospective residents should complete the following:
- Provide a current curriculum vitae and letter of intent.
- Request an official transcript of your grades to be forwarded directly to the PhORCAS Transcripts Department.
- Ask three references who are familiar with your professional and academic background to complete reference documents in PhORCAS. We prefer that you ask clinical faculty members and/or employers to provide your references.
- We request that your references include comments in at least 10 of the 13 comment boxes on the form in place of writing a traditional letter of recommendation.
- The program-specific comment box is optional.

Thank you for your interest in Pediatric Pharmacy!
Cone health has a legacy of pharmacy residency training since 1968 and has trained pediatric clinical specialists for over 25 years – initially with a NICU fellowship, then the only ASHP approved PGY2 NICU residency, and now a PGY2 Pediatric program which is currently in candidate status with ASHP.
Our teaching philosophy is to provide challenging learning experiences that are tailored to the individual, allowing you to grow and develop into a competent pediatric clinical specialist. Together we will design a training program around your knowledge, skills and interests. Our goal is to teach you how to use evidence-based medicine in making patient care decisions, how to meet medication needs of patients and care-givers, and to enable you to develop collaborative relationships with other multidisciplinary professionals. Residents are an integral part of our team at Cone Health both in the pharmacy and beyond. You will be actively involved in making decisions that are aligned with our mission and objectives. Integral to our commitment to residency training is the knowledge that each resident brings a unique set of skills to our institution which contribute to our progressive practice of pharmacy. Finally, our program supports you by setting clear expectations and providing guidance while maintaining the autonomy required to gain confidence in managing one’s own progressive clinical pediatric pharmacy practice.

PGY2 pharmacy residency programs build on doctor of pharmacy (PharmD) education and PGY1 pharmacy residencies to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists in specialized areas of practice. PGY2 residencies provide residents with opportunities to function independently as practitioners by conceptualizing and integrating accumulated experience and knowledge and incorporating both into the provision of patient care that improves medication therapy. Residents who successfully complete an accredited PGY2 pharmacy residency should possess competencies that qualify them for clinical pharmacist and/or faculty positions and position them to be eligible for attainment of board certification in the specialized practice area (when board certification for the practice area exists).
