Moses Cone Heart and Vascular Center donates 15 AEDs

Moses Cone Heart and Vascular Center is donating 15 automated external defibrillators (AEDs) to public facilities and community organizations across the Triad. This round of AED distributions will be in addition to the 30 AEDs donated and installed during 2010, continuing the Health System’s commitment to the community’s health and safety.

Industries for the Blind, Children’s Home Society of NC, Senior Resources of Guilford County, Greensboro Parks and Recreation Trails Division at Bur-Mil Park, Eden Parks and Recreation, Greensboro’s Country Park, Spencer Love Tennis Center and Triad Stage all received AEDs April 25 and 26.

The donations are part of HeartSafe 180, a hospital-led outreach program designed to help protect communities from sudden cardiac arrest, the leading cause of death in the United States and in this region.

Sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) is the sudden, unexpected loss of heart function, breathing and consciousness. The only definitive treatment for SCA is a defibrillation shock which must be administered within a few minutes to be effective. A victim’s chances of survival decrease by 7 to 10 percent for every minute that passes without treatment.

Through its participation in the HeartSafe 180 program, Moses Cone Heart and Vascular Center has helped ensure the safety and well-being of visitors and employees at several regional facilities, including locations in Gibsonville, Liberty, Pleasant Garden and Kernersville as well as the Greensboro, Reidsville and High Point Parks and Recreation Departments and the Asheboro Public Works Employee Clinic.

The Moses Cone Heart and Vascular Center is among the busiest cardiac centers in North Carolina and was rated as the #1 center for major heart surgery in North Carolina by the 2011 CareChex National Hospital Quality Study. The Society of Thoracic Surgeons rates Moses Cone Heart and Vascular Center in the top 10 percent of U.S. hospitals with a 3-star highest quality rating in major heart surgery quality and volume with fewer major complications. With 50 nationally and internationally recognized cardiologists and cardiovascular surgeons, Moses Cone Heart and Vascular Center is known for its advanced cardiovascular treatments.
