Outpatient center for spine/pain surgeries announced

Spine surgery and back pain patients who don’t need an overnight hospital stay have a more convenient place for surgery thanks to a joint venture involving Moses Cone Health System, SCA, and area surgeons. The System has joined Carolina Neurosurgery and Vanguard Brain and Spine in buying into the Greensboro Specialty Surgery Center at 3812 N. Elm Street. SCA and a group of area physicians remain partners in the center.

“The cases that will be done at the Center don’t require the resources of a hospital. Moving them from Moses Cone Hospital makes it more convenient for patients,” says Jim Roskelly, Executive Vice President, Strategic Development. “Also, it allows us to use our hospital operating rooms for higher level cases.”

The partnership came together for a number of reasons. “Our patients will benefit from having surgery in a center that is focused on outpatient spine surgery as well as other types of outpatient surgery,” according to Dr. Jeff Jenkins, a neurosurgeon with Vanguard Brain and Spine. “The Greensboro Specialty Surgery Center is a great facility, and it will allow us to treat our patients more efficiently. We expect better patient satisfaction and outcomes as well as reduced overall costs for surgery.”

"In addition to being able to provide higher quality of care in a more efficient and inexpensive manner, removing these patients from the more intensive environment of a hospital will improve their overall experience," adds Dr. Gary Cram, a neurosurgeon with Carolina Neurosurgery.

The 10,800-square-foot building has three operating and two procedure rooms. Recent renovations at the center now allow the treatment of a wide range of patients, including those in need of spine, ophthalmic, podiatric and other types of surgery. Terms of the deal are not being disclosed.
