Records Set for Women’s Only 5K Walk & Run

A record field of 3,716 women took part in the 20th Women’s Only 5K Walk & Run held Saturday at Women’s Hospital. The event raised more than $118,000 to support the Mammography Scholarship Fund at Women’s Hospital. (Last year the event brought in $100,000.) The fund provides mammograms to women who might not otherwise be able to afford one.

“Mammograms remain the very best way to detect breast cancer early,” says Cindy Farrand, President, Women’s Hospital. “It’s wonderful that so many women make sure that all women in our community have an opportunity to get this important test.” Cone Health Cancer Center treats more breast cancer cases than any other cancer type.

The Women’s Only 5K Walk & Run is an essential part of Cone Health’s commitment to the communities it serves.

A special part of the 20th anniversary Women’s Only was the running of a shadow event in Kuwait. Women of the 113th Sustainment Brigade (a Greensboro-based Army National Guard Unit stationed in Kuwait) ran a 5K mirroring the Women’s Only. Cone Health provided race medals for the winners and 100 “pink camo” T-shirts for participants.

Jennifer Hannen of Greensboro posted the best time in this year’s Greensboro event. She covered the 3.1-mile United States Track & Field-certified course stretching from Women’s Hospital to the Cone Health Cancer Center and back in an official time of 19 minutes and 28 seconds. April Irwin of Greensboro was second with a 19 minute, 53 second finish. For race results, go to: and click on race results.
