Cancer Center Earns Dual Accreditation

The Cone Health Cancer Center has received a three-year accreditation with commendation by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer (CoC). Also, the Center’s breast cancer program has earned accreditation for the first time from the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers.

“These two accreditation show our continued emphasis on providing exceptional cancer care,” says Skip Hislop, Vice President, Cone Health Cancer Center. “These accreditation are a great way for people to know that the high-quality cancer care in our community meets or exceeds the accreditation standards offset for top-tier cancer centers.”

The Cancer Center was evaluated against 34 standards in five areas by the Commission on Cancer and was commended in all five areas. “As a result of not having any deficiencies, the Cancer Center is eligible for the Commission on Cancer’s Outstanding Achievement Award,” said Hislop. This award is earned by only 14 percent of cancer centers surveyed. Recipients will be notified in early 2013.

CoC-accredited programs diagnose and/or treat approximately 80 percent of all newly diagnosed cancer patients each year. Accreditation is given only to those facilities that have voluntarily committed to providing the highest level of quality cancer care, and that undergo a rigorous evaluation process and review of their performance.  To maintain accreditation, facilities with CoC-accredited cancer programs must undergo an on-site review every three years.

The Cancer Center was evaluated against 28 standards in six areas by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers and was compliant in all. “Cone Health Cancer Center treats more breast cancers than any other type of cancer. Earning this accreditation shows our commitment to improving breast cancer care in our community,” says Hislop.
