Moses Cone Hospital Trauma Center Earns Recertification

The American College of Surgeons recently recertified the Level II trauma center at The Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital through August 2015. Moses Cone Hospital became the first Level II trauma center in North Carolina in 1984.

The recertification process reviews the trauma system -- from the EMS crews in the field to the therapists who help trauma patients recover their lives. “This is a gold seal for everyone who cares for a trauma patient,” says Dr. Jay Wyatt, Medical Director, Cone Health Trauma Services. “More importantly, it is gold seal for the more than 700 accident victims and others we see every year whose lives depend on prompt, highly specialized care.”

Trauma centers must meet criteria well beyond typical emergency departments. Level II trauma centers must have prompt access to trauma physicians, neurosurgery, orthopaedic surgery and critical care specialists. They must also offer a wide variety or rehabilitation programs and have an injury prevention coordinator working to reduce injuries in communities served by the center.

The American College of Surgeons established its verification program in 1987. Verified trauma centers meet the essential criteria outlined by the American College of Surgeons' Committee on Trauma. The program provides confirmation that a trauma center has demonstrated its commitment to providing the highest quality trauma care for all injured patients.

The American College of Surgeons is a scientific and educational association of surgeons founded in 1913 to raise the standards of surgical education and practice and to improve the care of the surgical patient. The College has more than 72,000 members, and it is the largest association of surgeons in the world.
