Cone Health Heart and Vascular Center Becomes First in State to Receive Atrial Fibrillation Certification

The Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital has become the first in North Carolina to receive full Atrial Fibrillation Certification status from the Society of Cardiovascular Patient Care (SCPC).

Logo“This certification shows the leadership and commitment Cone Health Heart and Vascular Center has in providing exceptional cardiovascular service to our patients,” says Cone Health Vice President, Heart and Vascular Center and Imaging Services Rich Lundy. “Earning this certification is one way we make sure we meet or exceed recognized standards of caring for atrial fibrillation patients.”

Atrial fibrillation is the most common type of arrhythmia. An arrhythmia is an irregular and often rapid heartbeat. Nearly 3 million people in the United States have diagnosed atrial fibrillation, and are at higher risk for stroke and potential death. SCPC’s goal is to help facilities better care for atrial fibrillation patients, provide more effective treatments, and to educate patients and healthcare providers to more efficiently care for this disease.

“This certification not only affirms the high-quality program we have at Cone Health, but demonstrates our commitment throughout the organization and into the community,” says Cone Health Medical Director of Emergency Services Dr. John Bednar.

Key areas in which a facility must meet the high certification standards include:

  • Strong working relationship between the emergency department and emergency medical services.
  • Emergency assessment of atrial fibrillation patients.
  • Prioritizing atrial fibrillation patients.
  • Treatment of atrial fibrillation patients seeking care in the emergency department.
  • Atrial fibrillation discharge criteria from the emergency department, observation services or inpatient stay.
  • Atrial fibrillation patient education in the emergency department, observation services and inpatient unit.
  • Personnel, competencies and training.
  • Process improvement.
  • Organizational structure and commitment.
  • Educating the community about atrial fibrillation.

In addition to atrial fibrillation, the Cone Health Heart and Vascular Center has earned chest pain and heart failure accreditations from SCPC.
