Women’s Only 5K Walk & Run Creates Support Role for Men

The 22nd annual Women’s Only 5K Walk & Run has something new this year, a place for men. Men can join the Men's Only Support Team.

Men's Only Support Team T-Shirt“So many guys have wanted to play a bigger role in the Women’s Only in the past,” says Cone Health Vice President of Oncology Services Skip Hislop. “Men are always at the Women’s Only supporting their wives, mothers, sisters and friends. It is time to give them a more formal role. So we created the Men’s Only Support Team.”

Men can go online to womensonlyrace.com and join the Men’s Only Support Team. The $30 registration fee helps women in need obtain support during diagnosis and/or treatment — from transportation to and from appointments to wigs. Men receive a gray T-shirt showing their support and an imprinted string bag to hold their favorite runner’s belongings as she runs.

“The Women’s Only is about making sure every woman who has breast cancer has the chance to find it at its earliest possible stage,” says Hislop. “The Men’s Only Support Team is there to make the rest of that journey a bit better.” The staff of the Cone Health Cancer Center treats more breast cancer than any other cancer.

The Women’s Only 5K Walk & Run is the largest fund raiser for the Mammography Scholarship Fund. The fund helps provide screening mammograms to women who might not otherwise be able to afford them. Mammography remains the best way to detect breast cancer at its earliest, most treatable stage.

The Nov. 22 event will be held at Women’s Hospital. It begins at 8:15 a.m. with the Girls’ Only race for participants 6 years old and younger. There will be dozens of exhibitors, warm ups from Jazzercise and other activities. Registration is $40. Girls’ Only Mini-Walk & Run registration is $10. Women, girls and now men can register at womensonlyrun.com.
