2015 Women’s Only 5K Walk & Run Cancelled Due to Weather
After consultations between Cone Health and the Greensboro Police Department, the 2015 Women’s Only 5K Walk & Run has been cancelled. Greensboro police will need to focus personnel and resources on public safety to deal with the heavy rains and potential for flooding over the next several days.
Greensboro police officers play a major role in the Women’s Only 5K Walk & Run, closing roads and providing security for the more than 2,500 runners who take part in the annual event. “Based on storm forecasts, we anticipate weather conditions will make participation in this event unsafe for runners and event organizers,” said Capt. John Wolfe with the Greensboro Police Department. “We cannot dedicate manpower in support of this event when it may be needed more for urgent incidents and to provide basic police services to the Greensboro community. Plus, if conditions are bad, as predicted, we are encouraging people to stay at home – not come out for the race – although the race is for a good cause.”
Run participants who have not picked up their Women’s Only T-shirts, or who wish to purchase one, can do so on Friday, Oct. 2 between 4 and 7 p.m. at the Women’s Hospital Education Center.
“We know that our race participants, volunteers, sponsors and exhibitors are disappointed but we also know that they are pleased to have their monetary support go to such a worthwhile cause,” says Women’s Hospital President Cindy Farrand. “Last year alone, 492 women in our community got mammograms through the Mammography Scholarship Fund, life-saving screenings they otherwise could not afford.”
Farrand asks that participants circle Oct. 1 on their 2016 calendars as the date for the next Women’s Only 5K Walk & Run.
