Cone Health Tops State in Several Areas for Care and Safety

CareChex ranks Cone Health highly in many areas for medical excellence and patient safety.

Cone Health has been recognized as being the No. 1 health system in the state in nine medical and eight patient safety categories. The 2016 quality awards are from CareChex®—a division of Comparion. The organization issues quality ratings designed to help hospitals improve quality and help consumers better understand medical excellence and patient safety.

Quality data from Annie Penn Hospital, The Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital, Wesley Long Hospital and Women’s Hospital is listed as Moses Cone Hospital in the CareChex ratings. Alamance Regional Medical Center results are listed separately and can be found here (hyperlink). Cone Health has been recognized as No. 1 in the state for medical excellence in the following:

  • Cardiac care
  • Gall bladder removal
  • Gastrointestinal care
  • General surgery
  • Heart attack treatment
  • Pneumonia care
  • Spinal fusion
  • Spinal surgery
  • Trauma care

Cone Health has been recognized as No. 1 in the state for patient safety in the following:

  • Overall hospital care
  • Overall surgical care
  • Cancer care
  • Gastrointestinal care
  • General surgery
  • Hip fracture repair
  • Pneumonia care
  • Spinal fusion

On average, several thousand hospitals are compared in each category. “To be tops in the state when it comes to the quality of care in these high-profile areas is extraordinary,” says Cone Health Chief Medical Officer, Bruce Swords, MD, PhD. “This is testimony to the work of our staff and proof that few places offer better health care than Cone Health.”

CareChex uses six peer-reviewed methodologies, many of which are used nationally by the Healthcare Quality Alliance and Agency for Healthcare Research Quality.

  • Core measures (adherence to scientifically researched standards of care)
  • Inpatient quality indicators (set of measures using hospital administrative data)
  • Patient safety indicators (the number of adverse events or avoidable medical errors)
  • Mortality rates
  • Complication rates
  • Patient satisfaction rates
