Cone Health Hospitals Earn Straight A’s From Leapfrog Group

The scores recognize hospitals that avoid accidents, errors, injuries and hospital-associated infections

Cone Health acute care hospitals earned A grades from The Leapfrog Group, an independent industry watchdog. The health care safety organization awarded its top designation to Annie Penn Hospital, Alamance Regional Medical Center, Moses Cone Hospital and Wesley Long Hospital. Leapfrog does not grade specialty hospitals such as Cone Health Behavioral Health Hospital and Women’s Hospital. The scores rate how well hospitals protect patients from errors, injuries and infections.

“This is a terrific result for Cone Health as well as for the communities we serve,” says Cone Health Chief Medical Officer, Bruce Swords, MD, PhD. “It’s great to be among the nation’s top hospitals in quality, but it is even better knowing that the people who use our services have avoided many needless complications and infections.”

“Avoidable deaths in hospitals should be the number one concern of our health care leaders. Hospitals that earn an A from Leapfrog are leaders in saving lives, and we commend them and urge their continued vigilance,” said The Leapfrog Group President and CEO Leah Binder.

Developed under the guidance of Leapfrog’s Blue Ribbon Expert Panel, the Hospital Safety Score uses 30 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to assign A, B, C, D and F grades to more than 2,500 U.S. hospitals twice per year. It is calculated by top patient safety experts, peer-reviewed, fully transparent and free to the public. For the first time, the Hospital Safety Score includes five measures of patient-reported experience with the hospital as well as two of the most common infections – C. diff and MRSA.
